Fiber Optic Lighting Applications at Barr Al Jissah Resort
Muscat is the capital of the Sultanate of Oman, the largest city in Oman and one of the oldest cities in the Middle East. Just 15 minutes from Muscat, Barr Al Jissah is a 124-acre resort with breathtaking ocean and desert vistas.
The resort includes the "Castle" with 180 suites and rooms, the "Town" with 198 rooms and numerous meeting facilities, and the family-oriented "Oasis" with 302 rooms. All 680 rooms and suites face the sea, overlooking a total length of 580m of beach.
In terms of lighting design, the owner's request was to design a systematic lighting solution that meets all the needs of the resort's indoor and outdoor spaces, is in harmony with the natural environment, and conforms to the positioning of a high-quality resort.
LDPI designed the stunning fiber optic chandelier and worked with Preciosa and Universal Fibre Optics on design detailing and implementation. In the double-height Al Bandar luxury stairwell, chandeliers are suspended from layers of crystal beads, with optical fibers attached to the ends of each bead, creating a color-changing shimmering effect.
Surprisingly, instead of using solar energy, the project used fiber optic lighting, which was chosen for its ready-to-use color advantage over LEDs. Due to the previous failure experience, the owner was very resistant to optical fiber at first, but the designer explained the advantages of optical fiber to the owner, especially the simple daily maintenance and the easy control of the color, which convinced the owner.
The lighting designer positioned the project as green lighting. Green lighting is a concept proposed by the US National Environmental Protection Agency in the early 1990s. The complete connotation of green lighting includes four indicators such as high efficiency and energy saving, environmental protection, safety and comfort, which are indispensable. High efficiency and energy saving means that enough lighting can be obtained with less power consumption, thereby significantly reducing the emission of air pollutants from power plants and achieving the purpose of environmental protection. Safety and comfort refer to clear and soft lighting, no harmful light such as ultraviolet rays and glare, and no light pollution. The reason why the fiber optic lighting system can stand out in this increasingly competitive society is inseparable from its own green lighting characteristics.
As an emerging industry, fiber optic lighting must be different from other peers in order to develop. As the fiber optic lighting system is used more and more widely, it is believed that it will spread to various places in the near future.
